Help Detoxify Your Body Everyday – Tip # 3

Just as important as what you eat is also what you don’t eat.  The focus of this next point is on foods that shouldn’t be a part of any healthy eating plan, especially if you are trying to reap the benefits of detoxification.

Tip # 3 – Eliminate the junk!

Don't eat this crap

You'll be kicking yourself later if you actually eat this!

The first step in ridding the body of excess toxins is to avoid (as much as possible) taking in more toxins!

Foods to eliminate from your diet include highly processed and refined foods such as white flour and sugar products. Also watch out for food additives such as refined salt, artificial sweeteners, colourings, flavourings and chemical preservatives, along with unhealthy hydrogenated and trans fats. Unfortunately, the biggest culprit of these ingredients are the packaged and convenience goods that are so readily available for consumption, such as frozen dinners, instant rice/pasta packages (just add water!), canned soups, crackers and cookies.

All of these can contribute to toxicity and congestion in our bodies. They also lack the vital vitamins, minerals and enzymes needed for proper metabolism.

Careful not to be fooled by pretend “health products” either. Just because it’s sold at the health food store doesn’t necessarily make it healthy.

You have to become a label reader. But I urge you not to obsess over the nutritional information, such as calories, fat, etc. This definitely plays a role in some circumstances, but before you even get to that point first check the ingredient listing. If there’s a long list of ingredients that you do not recognize or cannot pronounce, put it back on the shelf where it belongs. Ideally you want to buy foods with as few ingredients as possible. Many whole foods wouldn’t even have an ingredient list!

There you have it.

Eliminate the junk!

Help Detoxify your Body Everyday – Tip #2

Welcome back to my discussion on detoxification.

Before I continue with my next tip, I’d first like to cover off a few other areas that I didn’t mention in my last post.

As I mentioned previously, most of us could do with making some simple changes to our everyday diet that support the body’s natural detoxification processes, given the fact that we are exposed to so many toxins daily. Below is a list of tell-tale signs and symptoms that may further convince you that your body could use a little detoxifying action.

Indicators of a toxic body can include:

- Frequent headaches

- Chronic tiredness

- Excess weight

- Digestive disturbances

- Skin eruptions and rashes

- Frequent colds and flu

- Excess mucous production

A lot of people believe that just because they don’t have a diagnosed health condition or have specific symptoms that they are automatically healthy. But health isn’t just simply the absence of disease – health is a state of optimal well-being.

So many people are willing to accept feeling just  “average” or “okay” on a daily basis, and many may take the list of symptoms mentioned above as just a part of the “natural” aging process.

The truth is, many people do not know how potentially great they could feel given the appropriate diet and lifestyle changes. Detoxification isn’t just about preventing or overcoming an illness. It can also bring about a level of vibrant health that you may never thought possible.

Benefits of Detox-ing

Here are just a few of the benefits you may experience as the body rids itself of excess toxins.

- Increased energy

- Improved digestion

- Glowing skin

- Reduced food cravings

- Weight loss (if you have it to lose)

- Enhanced physical and emotional wellbeing

Who wouldn’t want to experience even just one of these “side effects”??

So with that said, here is the next tip!

Tip # 2 – Increase Fibre to Feel Fabulous

I think most people have heard before that fibre is essential for intestinal health and keeping things moving through and eventually out of the body.  Furthermore though, it is absolutely necessary in helping the body eliminate toxins.

Bile is manufactured in the liver where it acts as a carrier for toxins to be delivered to the intestinal tract before it is excreted out of the body via the feces.

There’s a catch though.

In order for the toxin-rich bile to actually be excreted out of the body, it needs to be absorbed by fibre first. This means if you’re not getting an adequate amount of fibre in your diet you are essentially re-absorbing all of those toxins back into your body and back into circulation. This is what is referred to as “autointoxication”. Up to 99% of bile can be reabsorbed if there is not enough fibre in the diet to aid in its excretion.

Now here’s a scary fact. The average person only gets a little over 10 grams of fibre per day. Ideally you should be getting at least 40 to 50 grams. This means that there are a lot of toxic (and constipated) people walking around!

Another great thing about fibre is that it adds bulk to the stool. This helps eliminate it faster and with less exertion. The amount of time it takes between eating a particular food and then excreting that same food via the feces is what is known as transit time. You can test your own transit time by doing a simple little test. This is what’s known as “the beet” test. Basically you eat some beets with a meal (they have to be fresh and not pickled) and then you wait and see how long it takes to see the remnants of the red colour in the toilet after having a bowel movement. For all you people who have never eaten fresh beets before, take this as your official “heads up”. Don’t be alarmed!

Ideally your transit time should be no longer than 24 hours. And if it is, you are likely constipated. Ideally you should be having at least 2 easy bowel movements (better yet 3!) per day. Unfortunately some people actually go that many times in an entire week (which is not normal regardless of what your doctor may have told you!). Constipation can wreak havoc on your health. Food that is left in your intestinal tract for an extended period of time can ferment and putrefy resulting in the production of a number of toxic by-products that create a breeding ground for harmful bacteria to proliferate. For this reason it is very important to keep things moving!

Tips for Increasing Fibre

1) Aim for 40-50 grams per day.

2) Increase your intake of fibre, especially the soluble variety. Soluble-fibre forms a gel-like substance when mixed with water and swells. This creates bulk and also acts as a “sponge” which absorbs bile and promotes its excretion.  Sources include: oats, legumes (beans, lentils, peas), barley, fruits such as apples and pears, *psyllium husks and ground flax seeds.

* Note: Psyillium husks shouldn’t be taken by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding or by people with esophagitis

3) Increase your intake of veggies and fruits with the skin.

4) When eating grains always go for 100% whole grain with the fibre intact.

5) When increasing fibre (especially soluble-fibre) it is crucial to also make sure that you increase your water intake. Otherwise the end result will be counterproductive and can actually cause you to become (more) constipated.

There you have it.

Help Detoxify your Body Everyday – Tip #1

Detoxification” seems to be the latest buzz word these days. Everywhere you turn it seems somebody is talking about being on the latest “detox diet” or “cleanse”, and the number of  products designed to help you detoxify your body are cropping up on store shelves every day. It seems it is almost trendy these days to be on a detox!

The word detox likely conjures up a number of different images for different people, such as running to the toilet 10 times a day, living on nothing but vegetable juices and herbal concoctions, or perhaps even going to some remote island where you meditate for hours on end while chanting to the Sun Gods.

Now don’t get me wrong, I do support a good detox diet that includes limiting certain foods, eating lighter fare, and adding specific supplements or herbs to your diet that increase the body’s natural ability to detoxify. My only concern is, how can you expect to rid your body of toxins that have built up over your entire lifetime in a detox program that lasts 3, 5 or even 10 days?

Whereas you may decide to take a break from some toxic habits such as eating  sugar or drinking alcohol, the fact of the matter is, there are many things that can be (and should be) incorporated into your life each and everyday to support detoxification and promote optimal health – not just for a few days a year before returning back to your regular bad habits.

So what exactly does the word detoxification mean? Simply stated, detoxification is the removal of toxins from the body. However, it’s not that simple!

We are exposed to a barrage of toxins daily through the food that we eat, the air that we breathe, and products that we put on our skin. In the past 75 years alone over 80,000 new chemical s have been introduced into our environment!

Then there are the internal toxins which are created inside our bodies. These include the by-products of metabolic processes and bacterial wastes.

When there is an increase in toxic build-up in the body, numerous illnesses and health complications can ensue.

With that said, there is no better determinant of health than a body that is able to detoxify effectively. A body that cannot detoxify properly is paving the road to a future of ill-health.

The  major organ systems involved in physical detoxification include the digestive, urinary, dermal (skin), respiratory and lymphatic system. However, the primary organs are the liver, kidneys and intestines.  And based on the number of toxins we are exposed to daily, it is likely these organs need all the help they can get!

The focus of this post is to talk about “everyday” things that you can start doing right now, that can help support your body’s natural ability to detoxify.

The quality of our life and health is greatly affected by the choices we make every day; from the food we choose to put in our mouth, the products we purchase, the activities we decide to participate in, the people we choose to spend time with, to the thoughts we think.

Recently I gave a series of nutrition talks on the topic of detoxification along with my fellow nutritionista friend Joy. We gave our “top 10 tips” for everyday ways to detoxify your life. For the purposes of this blog however, I decided I would focus solely on the “diet” portion of our talk and break it down to 5 tips instead.

Other tips that we talked about that I’m not going to cover here were: ditching toxic habits like smoking and drinking excessively, getting adequate sleep and exercise, supporting your body with supplements and limiting toxins in your home.

So with that said, here is tip #1 of my “top 5 diet tips” you can incorporate into your life everyday to help detoxify your body!

Tip #1 – Boost your intake of natural detoxifying foods

Yes, that’s right! There are foods that exist which actually increase your body’s natural detoxifying properties.

These include:

1) Cruciferous Vegetables: such as kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower and turnips.

4) Other natural detoxifying foods include:  beets, carrots, apples, artichokes, lemons, limes and spices such as turmeric.

All of these foods mentioned help to protect the liver from damage, improve liver function and increase detoxification pathways in the body.

Note: Some of the foods fall under more than one category

The key is to try and incorporate as many of these foods into your diet each and everyday!

Here’s a simple and easy recipe that you can make for dinner tonight!
